If you front the materials, the time and the effort, then wait weeks to get paid, you are lending money to your client for free. A deposit flips that. The client funds the work, not you.
Why a deposit pays for itself
Taking money up front does three jobs at once:
- It covers your costs early. Materials and startup time come out of the client's deposit, not your own cushion.
- It smooths your cash flow. Money arrives when the work begins, not weeks after it ends, so your account never runs dry mid-project.
- It filters your clients. Someone unwilling to pay a deposit is often someone who was going to be slow, or a problem, at the end too. Better to learn that on day zero.
How much, and when
A third to a half of the total is normal for project work. Enough to cover your real costs and signal commitment, not so much that it scares a good client off.
For larger jobs, do not wait for one lump at the end. Split the total into stages and bill as you hit each one: a deposit to start, a payment at the halfway mark, the balance on delivery. Your cash then rises alongside the work instead of hanging on a single finish line.
A deposit is not you being difficult. It is the work funding itself, the way every other trade already works.
