Plenty of profitable businesses still run into cash trouble, because profit on paper and money in the bank are not the same thing. The fix is not a finance degree. It is a short, honest look at three numbers, every week.
The three numbers that matter
- Cash on hand. What is actually in the account today, ready to spend.
- Owed to you. The total of unpaid invoices. This is money you have earned but not collected.
- Owed by you. Bills, suppliers and taxes coming due.
Together these tell you the truth that a bank balance alone hides: whether you are actually ahead, or just holding money that already belongs somewhere else.
The ten-minute weekly ritual
Pick a fixed time, the same slot every week, and check:
- Did anything get paid this week? Mark it off.
- What is overdue? Send the reminders now, while you are here.
- What is due from you in the next two weeks? Make sure the cash will be there.
Ten minutes. That is the whole habit. The power is in doing it every week, so a problem shows up as a small nudge rather than a nasty surprise.
Two habits that make it effortless
- Keep business and personal money apart. One clean account makes every number above easy to read, and makes tax season calm instead of frantic.
- Set aside tax the day money lands. Move a slice into a separate pot immediately. The tax bill is a date, not a surprise.
You cannot steer what you do not look at. Ten minutes a week is enough to see the road.
