Raise your prices without losing your clients

A price rise handled with a little notice and a lot of calm keeps almost everyone. Here is how to do it cleanly.

Kerythos team · July 5, 2026

Your costs went up. Your skill went up. Your prices stayed put. Sound familiar? A raise is not a betrayal of loyal clients, it is basic maintenance of a healthy business. Done with care, most people barely blink.

Get your head right first

You are not asking permission. You are informing people of a new rate, the same way your suppliers inform you. Clients can tell the difference between a nervous apology and a calm statement, and they respond to whichever one you give them.

  • Decide the new number before you write a word.
  • Pick a start date a few weeks out, not tomorrow.
  • Give a single, simple reason, or none at all.

You do not owe anyone last year's prices. Loyalty runs both ways, and part of it is letting you stay in business.

Say it plainly

A good notice is short, warm and clear. Something like: "From the first of next month, my rate for this work will be X. Thank you for your business, and I am glad to keep working together."

That is the whole message. No long justification, no bracing for a fight. Give existing clients a little runway and, if you like, one last job at the old rate as a goodwill gesture.

Expect less drama than you fear

Most clients stay. A few will ask a question, and a very few may leave, usually the ones who cost you the most to serve anyway. Raising your prices gently sorts your list toward the people who value the work.

Practical steps that make it easy:

  • Update your standard estimate and invoice amounts on the start date.
  • Keep the wording identical for every client so nothing feels personal.
  • Hold the number when someone pushes. A rate you defend is a rate people respect.

Pick your new price and a start date this week. Send one calm notice, then let it stand.
