Stop discounting by default

A reflex discount trains clients to always ask for one. Trade a lower price for something you get back instead.

When a client hesitates, the easy move is to knock a bit off. It feels helpful. But a discount given for nothing teaches that client, and the next one, that your first price was never real. There is a better way to say yes.

What a discount really costs

A ten percent cut is not ten percent of your price. It comes straight off your profit, the thin slice left after all your costs. Give that away casually and you can work harder for less, one "small" discount at a time.

A price you drop the moment someone frowns was never a price. It was an opening bid.

Never discount for free, trade instead

If you are going to move on price, get something in return. That keeps your rate honest and rewards the clients who actually help your business.

  • Volume. A better rate for a bigger commitment or several jobs booked at once.
  • Speed of payment. A small break for paying upfront or within a few days.
  • Flexibility. A lower price for off-peak timing that fills a quiet week.
  • Referrals. A gesture in exchange for an introduction that brings you real work.

Each of these is a fair swap. The client gets a reason to feel good, and you get value back rather than just less money.

Hold the line kindly

When someone simply asks "is that your best price," you do not have to flinch. A warm, steady answer works: "That is the price for this scope. If we adjust what is included, I can adjust the number." Now the conversation is about value, not just cost.

  • Reprice by changing scope, not by caving.
  • Keep your standard rate visible and consistent on every estimate.
  • Let the invoice reflect the real number so your work is never quietly undervalued.

Next time you feel the urge to discount, pause and name what you want in return. Trade, do not give away.
